AUSTRALIA opened up a commanding 2-0 lead over Taiwan on the first day of their Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group One play-off in Kaohsiung yesterday. World No. 22 Lleyton Hewitt cruised to a 6-4 6-0 6-3 victory over Ti Chen, ranked 248 places lower, in the opening singles rubber. Big-serving Chris Guccione then came out and made it a perfect start for the Aussies - though he had to work for it - eventually seeing off Taiwan's No.1 Yen-Hsun Lu 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 7-6 (11-9). Ranked 86, 22 places above his opponent, Guccione staved off a set point in the third set with a big kicking second serve. "He played a couple of good return games towards the end of the second set and I had to fight to hold serve, so it was good to get through that and obviously the the very tight tiebreak at the end," Guccione said.

Trams 'cost traders thousands'
It also says that 56.9 per cent of businesses surveyed have seen their turnover drop significantly. One businessman claims his two restaurants on Leith Walk are losing £10,000 a week.A range of support schemes are available to help traders through the disruption, including up to £4000 compensation for the worst-hit from tram firm Tie.But the FSB survey claims the average loss per business since the work started is now £26,333. Tie bosses today defended the compensation scheme, saying only five businesses had been in touch to complain. Graham Russell, chairman of the FSB Edinburgh branch, said the survey was proof the business support set-up is not working. He said: "This survey has shown there is clear evidence of extreme hardship and the current compensation scheme is not designed to cope with this."I think we need to go back and take a serious look at what support is available for businesses, but we need to move fast as these people are hurting now and they still need to get through the next phases of the project as well.
105064 - aka Fred Wolf Holocaust Survivor
Calia Mintzer, 30-year resident of Culver City, and a young 83, went to an over-50 mix-and-meet singles dance four years ago at the Culver City Senior Center, an event that she regularly attended on Saturdays for dancing and enjoyment. That night she was sitting in an area of the dance hall designated for women who are available for dancing, but got tired of waiting and decided to seek out a man, since "men, at that age, are typically shy when it comes to asking a woman to dance." Manfred (Fred) Wolf, 82, was the man she asked to dance, a newcomer to this particular mix-and-meet. He usually attended the Felicia Mahood Center mixer, but decided to have a change of scenery that night. While dancing, Wolf saw the Chai (letter from the Hebrew alphabet meaning "life," that serves as a reminder that life is G-d-given and sacred) on her necklace and exclaimed, "You're Jewish?!" She said, "Yes, and I advertise the fact." Mintzer then noticed the number "105064" tattooed on his left forearm and said, "Oh my G-d, are you a "Holocaust survivor?!" and he said, "Yes, I am." Wolf then proceeded to tell her about some of his experiences in the concentration camps.

ALL POLITICS IS LOCAL
But just as you need skills to drive a car, you need skills to participate in a democracy. It's wonderful that people have the right to vote, but we have to create a system that allows them to develop the skills to see why they're voting, who they're voting for and why they prefer that candidate's positions. On this issue, we here in Egypt still have lots of hard work to do. So how do you do it? How do you create a culture of civic rights and responsibilities? Education. We have to start early in the schools. We have to make people realize that they're not just beneficiaries of services, they're partners in their communities. You have a problem with the water in your community? Fine. Don't just scream, ‘We have no water!' No, be a leader. Get your friends and neighbors together and form a delegation to go to the authorities to present your problem and ask whether there's anything you can do to help make it better.
Lucas: Sampson guilty of mis-remembering past mistakes?
Sampson read from a prepared statement after Wednesday's loss to the Badgers, contending "I have never intentionally provided false or misleading information to the NCAA." Might just be another case of mis-remembering. Mike Lucas — 2/14/2008 7:22 am .

Are Designers The Enemy Of Design?
Does a great movie on global warming but does he walk the talk with a 20-room mansion and private jets? What is his real carbon footprint? Yes, he buys all kinds of carbon offsets, you know pay peasants in the Amazon to grow trees. But is that living a sustainable life. Can you buy your way to a carbon-free life there if you are rich? Both Davos and the Oscars were full of rich folks flying in on private jets leaving a big fat carbon footprint. Yet both conferences were allegedly CARBON-FREE. What's up with that? OK, enough. Now that I've insulted designers, allow me to insult myself. In the 90's, I was the editorial page editor of Business Week. I was the VOICE OF AUTHORITY. Truly, they had an ad campaign revolving around the voice of authority. I did design as a journalistic afterthought, at nights or the weekend.
