The duels that will shape sport in 2008

There are no restrictions placed upon him. He hasn't got to worry about continuing with the old and bold because that's how you make progress in World Cups. He doesn't have to play in a way which is determined by the importance of the fixture. Ashton can afford to let his players off the leash.

Telecom regulator slams DoT

NEW DELHI: Telecom regulator Trai has shot off a second letter to the DoT (department of telecom), cautioning it against its continued attempts to manipulate Trai's recommendations and mislead various stakeholders in the telecom community.

Trai has warned the telecom ministry of cherry picking parts of its recommendations, which it says is "unfair and misleading". DoT has issued 120 letters of intent (LoIs) for award of unified access service licences (UASL) citing Trai's August 28 2007 recommendations that there should be no cap on the number of access service providers in any service area.

Trai points out that its recommendation on the entry of new service providers has always been linked to the availability of spectrum. Trai conveyed this to DoT in a letter dated February 22 2003 and later, again on October 27 2003.

Stabbing suspect sentenced to prison

Helton was unresponsive at that time, according to the report, and an "excessive amount of blood was noted on Helton's shirt and pants.

"A puncture wound was observed on Helton's left chest, which is consistent with a knife wound," Mills' report states. "Helton was transported by Stoddard County Ambulance to Missouri Southern Healthcare for treatment and was later flown to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, where he was placed in ICU.

"During Atkins' interview, Atkins admitted to stabbing Helton once in the chest with his pocket knife during a brief altercation," the report went on to say. "Atkins admitted he fled the scene and later responded to his residence."

Mills then stated that Atkins allegedly admitted he left the knife he used to stab Helton lying next to a tree on his property, where detectives were later able to recover the weapon with blood on the knife blade.

Pete Sampras and his wife, actress Bridgette Wilson, have put their Beverly Hills home on the market for $25 million.

Long-Wed Couples Offer Lessons in Love

One of my favorite spectator sports involves watching long-married couples interact. Their gestures and mannerisms, comments and silences, form a private language, spoken and unspoken, that each pair has honed during their 50 or 60 years together.

Consider the way a husband absently pats his wife's shoulder as they walk, or the way she straightens his collar or brushes off a piece of lint, real or imagined, on his coat.

Watch the way he says, "Ready to go, Mother?" when they finish their meal in a restaurant. The way she smiles patiently as he tells a favorite story or joke for the thousandth time. And the way he opens her car door - a vestige of gallantry from an earlier age.

With their easy familiarity and quiet solicitude, these couples serve as unsuspecting examples of patience and enduring affection.

Clinton and Obama dig in for long fight after Super Tuesday

While Mr Obama's overwhelming support among black voters propelled him to victory in Georgia and Alabama, Mrs Clinton appeared to be splitting with him much of the white vote which might otherwise have gone to John Edwards, who dropped out of the race last week.

Howard Wolfson, her communications chief, said: "This has been a strong night but the contest will continue long into the future through the February states into the March 4 contests and in all likelihood beyond."

David Alexrod, Mr Obama's chief strategist, speaking in Chicago, said: "Both campaigns are coming out with a roughly even delegate count. It is a phenomenal thing when you think where we were a month and a half ago, when we were the prohibitive underdog against the biggest name in Democratic politics.

Amy Winehouse Stumbles Through EMA Performance; Plus Justin Timberlake ...

Amy Winehouse stumbled through her performance at the MTV Europe Music Awards on Thursday (November 1) shortly after giving a very brief acceptance speech when she won the Artists' Choice honor. The singer — who was announced as a last-minute addition to the show when she canceled her planned performance at the mtvU Woodie Awards on November 8 — gave a brief "thanks" when she accepted the award, and later appeared to have difficulty remembering the words to her own song and danced unsteadily as she performed. And while this year's MTV Video Music Awards belonged to Justin Timberlake (and Rihanna), JT wasn't able to replicate his success abroad at the EMAs. While he was the most nominated artist, he left with no awards — and maybe even more stunningly, he was outdone by Avril Lavigne, who nabbed Most Addictive Track ("Girlfriend") and Solo Artist of 2007.

Internet Family Sues MySpace After Teen Commits Suicide

While the Internet has a wealth of good things going for it, there are some bad points as well. Social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook illustrate these points well.

Most users of MySpace and Facebook use the sites as they were intended -- a place to meet friends and find like-minded people to chat with and make new friends. However, both Facebook and MySpace have had problems with sexual predators preying on unsuspecting children using the sites.

DailyTech reported earlier this month that Megan Meier, a 13-year-old girl, had committed suicide after a cyber-bully tormented her on her MySpace page. In the case of Meier, the local district attorney said charges were unlikely to be filed.

The Dallas Morning News reports that another young girl, a 14-year-old identified only as Julie Doe from California killed herself in July of 2006 after being sexually assaulted by a 30-year-old man that she had met on MySpace named Kiley Ryan Bowers.

INDIANAPOLIS TO CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- You can learn a lot about a fella by the way he deals with stress.

Me? I suck down a smoke -- and then cut and run. Not Ron Artest. No, when Ron's number is called, the Sacramento Kings forward goes to the hole. Literally.

"It happens whenever I get nervous," Artest admits.

This is a peculiar yet telling statement. See, Artest didn't feel this way before walking the aisle and most certainly not before NBA contests, playing in the All-Star Game or even before Game 6 of Round 1 in the Western Conference playoffs last season. No, Artest can roll with all that.

But this is a different tale altogether. Sitting in a fast-moving stretch H2 for a three-hour Indy-to-Champaign trek, flanked by eight of his closest Queensbridge Projects pals, Artest is forecasting a nervous night because in several hours he'll open for Ludacris at a rap concert at the University of Illinois -- where many people will be holding drinks and other potentially airborne projectiles.

eBay chief executive set to retire

Ten percent fewer customers visited eBay.com last month than in December 2006, the tracking company Nielsen Online said.

Though eBay has tried to get its most loyal customers to buy more, the overall decline in traffic has depressed business.

Gross merchandise volume -- the total amount of all goods and services sold on eBay.com -- has been growing at a slower pace over the last few years than e-commerce in general, which means that eBay is losing market share, particularly to Amazon.

The expected change of chief executives was first reported by the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.

Whitman's plans have not been disclosed, but she has been a contributor and fund-raiser for Mitt Romney, a Republican presidential contender. Like Whitman, Romney is a Bain alumnus.

Wall Street analysts and eBay observers have been preparing for Whitman's departure for some time, particularly as eBay's stock price has sagged.
