Norfolk woman swaps 'trademark' for a new look

At her job, Kathy Higgins finds ways to move freight clear across the country.

In her closet, she was a little lost.

"I had no style, is one way to put it," said the 39-year-old Norfolk woman.

In November, she was surprised by the hosts of the cable show "What Not to Wear," who helped revamp her wardrobe with $5,000 worth of clothes. The episode featuring Higgins airs at 9 tonight on TLC. It repeats at 11.

Higgins is one of a crop of locals selected when the "What Not to Wear" crew touched down in Hampton Roads in late 2006. A Virginia Beach fitness trainer, Melissa Buzzell, was featured on the show Jan. 25, and a third Hampton Roads woman will be on next Friday.

Higgins works at D.D. Jones, a transfer and warehousing company in Chesapeake.

Ice Storm Strands Many Unable to get to Shelters

We heard many stories like that today; people just pitching in to help their friends and neighbors and in some cases even strangers.

As for those volunteers, their work doesn't stop, but will continue Tuesday night at shelters that stay open to take people in out of the cold.

Jakey G Sharpens His Puzzle Skills

Jakey G was a smiley boy after grabbing some food at Urth Cafe in Beverly Hills on Monday. We're not quite sure if it was the weather or just the joy of wearing his favorite sweatshirt, but we're just happy to see him in good spirits. He brought along a newspaper for some quiet time alone, but we bet doing the crossword puzzle is even more fun with Reese lending a helping hand.

FedEx Kinkos Hired Man Who Admitted Statutory Rape, Documents Reveal

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A print shop hired a man who later molested two boys in their homes even though he admitted on his job application that he had been convicted of statutory rape, according to documents obtained in a lawsuit.

FedEx Corp., the parent company of FedEx Kinko's, said in 2005 it was "absolutely horrified" when the molestation allegations arose, saying a background check on Paul Sykes did not reveal a criminal history. But an attorney for one of the boys said the check should have been unnecessary because the company had a policy of not hiring felons.

"FedEx Kinkos and its parent company haven't been truthful," said Neal Rogan, attorney for the boy. "They had a potential employee who told them up front 'I'm a convicted felon for a sex crime' and went ahead and hired him anyway."

Paul Sykes, who worked in a FedEx Kinko's print shop in Fairfield, solicited customers there for a computer repair business he ran called "Facts and Fantasy," according to the lawsuit.

I also have a copy of the report and it clearly states ballesteros was ...

Agree with concerned by guest | hide/show Adan has never been arrested, no criminal record. Chronicle, why won't you endorse him? Labuda has zero experience, he should begin his political career somewhere else. Any law enforcement agency needs someone who knows what they are doing. Watch out Vann, Adan knows where the skeletons are buried. Democrats and Republicans both should VOTE FOR BALLESTEROS.

Heat bake Surf Dawgs in AWL action

Caleb Glafenhein, a right-handed pitcher from Corryton, Tenn., pitched a complete game for the Blythe Heat Tuesday afternoon at Desert Sun Stadium, beating the San Diego Surf Dawgs 5-3. Glafenhein allowed just seven hits to the Surf Dawgs, who scored a run in the fourth and two in the fifth. Blythe had taken an immediate lead, with Ryan Crespi scoring on a Steve Alexander RBI single in the top of the first, then two in the second on a Chris Akins home run. They added a run in the fourth when D. J. Dixon tripled to lead off, then scored on a single by Akins. In the ninth, Shaughn Neal single and scored on a double by Ross McCoy. Crespi had a total of three singles on the day. .

Lawmakers face tough vote on smoking ban

The legislation highlights the inconsistencies in the smoking debate. If it's important to protect the health of restaurant and bar employees, why shouldn't casino employees be afforded the same protection?Ultimately, it's difficult to predict what a smoking ban might look like after it snakes its way through the legislative process. Some House GOP members are set to offer amendments that would exempt bars and family farm corporations from smoking bans.Who can say no to family farmers? And if smokers can't go to a bar to puff, where can they go?It all raises some difficult questions for state lawmakers, who likely will have to take votes that will anger some people back home. The question is, which people. .

Exploding moose steals copper cables

Absolutely hilarious. I think she should be given a visa and allowed to stay indefinitely.

She has done an invaluable service to this country, she has exposed a fool proof way for Al Quaeda to breach our national borders and she has also shown how worthless ID cards will be. After all, she was given a pass to allow her into Parliament, which one might think would be somewhat secure.

Steve Browne

"...officials seem not to know where she got the pass or to whom it had been issued in the first place"

Every security pass I've ever carried has had two things in common, they all bore a picture of my face, and my name. Sometimes more, but never less.

This seems to suggest that despite all the TWaT hysteria that our 'representatives' foist upon us, those within parliament still don't really believe the threat sufficiently to implement even the basics of a door entry system such as one might find in any mid size corporation.
