Florida woos tech talent
College students, Florida is honored that you grace our beaches, hotels and restaurants for spring break. But, how about showing some real love and hanging with us year-round? Well, that's the mantra tech officials are chanting as they woo the best talent from across the country. This week, career center directors from more than 70 universities descended here for a speed-dating-like event at the Tampa Convention Center. The second annual career expo, organized by the Florida High Tech Corridor Council, paired university officials from prestigious colleges such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cornell University with Florida companies fishing for talent. "I think it's an educational issue," said Mark Savage, director of engineering and cooperative education and career services at Cornell.
Wild Card -- Weekend
So, another longtime tradition bites the dust. Next predicted budget-cutting move: The Street Dept. will stop picking up leaves. Are we supposed to feel fortunate that we still have sewer and water service?" CDADave/Thin Air DFO: I had the same thought as Dave: What's next? No more leaf pickup? .
Diet won't stop me having fun
Breakfast was wholemeal toast and some of that fab superfood sugar-free jam. For lunch, I had tuna and pasta bake and at night a big treat - steak and roasted vegetables. I was beyond excitement yesterday at the thought of Ashes to Ashes starting - I loved Life On Mars. My biggest claim to fame is that John Simm gave me a name check on the series. He was watching one of those Open University lecturers with a kipper tie and fawn trousers on his seventies TV set and he said "Don't look so happy, mate, one day you will be replaced by Lorraine Kelly". It was my finest hour. I did some of my Pilates exercises in the afternoon, but I don't ever think I put in as much effort when I am on my own. I need Jane to make me do that extra five or ten repetitions in order to get the most benefit.
Hispanics making huge financial impact on North Carolina, Surry County
I do not know what positive service you believe you are providing to Mt. Airy News readers, Surry County, North Carolina, or America by repeating ad nauseam your call for the toleration of illegal activity by Mexican and Central/South American immigrants. You are a smart guy, and are certainly aware that the largest portion of the Hispanic community is here illegally. The fact that 25.8% of Dobson is Hispanic (per the 2000 census you cite) should cause you as the editor of our newspaper to call for an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security and the Internal Revenue Service to determine why employers in the area are able to get away with hiring people who are in this country illegally. If the farmers and other employers did not hire them (illegally), then there would be no incentive to remain or come here in the first place.
Rockland code office getting its coffee fix
He did not give a date for reconvening the committee. Reilley also addressed in his letter the additional problem of chaff, a waxy membrane on the unroasted coffee bean that becomes airborne and emits fine particles from the stack during the roasting process. He said he had changed the airflow and the roasting schedule and made a slight change in the procedure. Reilley estimated the improvements would cost $5,000. Rock City Coffee Roasters is one of the businesses credited with starting the revival of the city's downtown economy 16 years ago, said City Manager Tom Hall. "We don't want to put a very important cornerstone business out of business," Hall said last month. The company's South Main Street roastery, which has been roasting coffee at the site since 1999, and combination coffee shop and secondhand bookstore on Main Street employ 24 people.
Your Steak — Medium, Rare or Cloned?
Last month the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the sale of cloned meat in the U.S., having determined that products from cloned cattle, pigs and goats are as safe to eat as meat from their naturally reproduced brethren. That makes advocates happy: Cloning enables the livestock industry to do in a fraction of the time what breeders have been doing throughout history, narrowing the gene pool to its most desirable genes. Beyond that, say cloners, future benefits include production of genetically engineered animals that could offer a variety of benefits more nutrient-rich milk, for example, for people without adequate access to food. .
Diamond Mogul Receives Angry Valentine
JDate users scouring the Jewish dating Web site in anticipation of Valentine's Day may have found a surprising match. Lev Leviev, the controversial Israeli diamond mogul, had appeared to register a profile on the site, including such information as, “in my free time, I enjoy: Exploitation, Profiteering, Union-Busting, and Macrame." The JDate profile was one of several recent Valentine's Day-themed acts of protest directed at Leviev, who in reality is not looking for love online but is a married father of nine and an active member of the Chabad-Lubavitch sect of Orthodox Judaism. His detractors oppose his use of diamond mines in Angola and what they say is his extensive involvement in housing construction for Jewish settlers on the West Bank. “Because a great deal of jewelry shopping goes on during the weekend before Valentine's Day, we thought it was appropriate to reach out to Valentine's Day shoppers and encourage them to stay away from Leviev's shop," said Issa Mikel, a human rights activist who works with Adalah-NY, a coalition of organizations strongly critical of Israeli policy.
Swan blames inflation rise on previous govt
Indeed it now looks like the low unemployment rates in 2007 were in part a mirage - in the sense that they were never sustainable. Agree (0) Alert moderator Doh: 23 Jan 2008 3:42:43pm I think unemployement rates just fell again Fred.Is that a result of the great enlightenment under Labor, or the dark ages of Liberals.Leave out the political football and things become much clearer. Agree (0) Alert moderator Doh: 23 Jan 2008 3:50:13pm Failed to use fiscal policy to dampen demand? What about all those interest rate rises? Should there have been more? Agree (0) Alert moderator Brisnae: 23 Jan 2008 4:23:45pm Don't blame governments for high inflation. Blame consumers for spending beyond their means and credit facilitators and money lenders for irresponsible lending to people whom they shouldn't be lending.
Ugandan rebels sign deals, walk out of talks
The LRA has been accused of murder, rape, the abduction of children and slicing off body parts. Although the rebellion has little direct impact on one of Africa's fastest growing economies, ending it permanently would be a major coup for President Yoweri Museveni and a relief in the coffee-exporting country of over 30-million. Ten Commandments It would also remove a destabilising element in a remote corner of the continent where conflicts can easily spill over national borders. The LRA once said it wanted to rule Uganda in accordance with the Bible's 10 Commandments, but it has never articulated a coherent political vision behind its long war. Under a second deal on Friday, the Ugandan government is to set up a special division of its high court to carry out criminal investigations after a final deal.
Internet Time Warner Cable to Trial Usage-based Billing Scheme for ...
When it comes to high-speed Internet, most people take for granted that their flat monthly fee will provide all the bandwidth needed for endless downloading. Time Warner Cable (TWC), on the other hand, doesn't quite see things that way. Just as Best Buy labeled its bargain-minded customers as "Devil Customers," TWC has its own subset of customers that take the "all you can eat" approach to Internet access. In order to discourage bandwidth gorging, TWC will trial a new billing system patterned after regular household utilities that we all have become familiar with. Like gas, water and electric bills, TWC will charge customers based on their usage instead of a flat fee. The move should help TWC weed out the five percent of its customers which it says horde over fifty percent of total network bandwidth.
