| Speeding up love at first site
If a match is found, you get an e-mail with a very brief physical description of your date, and a suggested location chosen from a standing list of bars and coffee shops. Once you accept, there's no going back. I had never tried online dating, with the exception of a few quasi-dates way back in the age of Friendster. On the other hand, I have been on plenty of blind dates before. To ease the pressure, I follow this advice: Treat your date like an interview for a job you don't want. With that in mind I usually enjoy myself. .
The scandal of Scotland's battered women
Case workers fear this puts them at risk, with many returning to their partners and further abuse. Labour MSP Johann Lamont, the party's communities spokeswoman, said: "I am shocked and really concerned about these figures, which represent women and children, in the most difficult circumstances, who are effectively refugees in their own country and need a safe place to live. .

Friday Night Lights changed player's life
Chavez considered practicing corporate law in big cities and working at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and New York Stock Exchange. But studying Hispanic culture resolved questions raised after he played on Odessa Permian's 1988 football team, which led to the publication of Buzz Bissinger's Friday Night Lights. "When I got to Harvard University, people asked, 'What are you?' meaning what ethnicity," he said. "I would say, 'Mexican,' and they'd ask, 'Are you from Mexico?' I wanted to know who I was and studied Mexican history, art, culture and border issues. "Most meaningful was the family orientation and how close relationships are. I saw everything this country and world could offer and made the conscious decision that Odessa's where I want to be.
Small Talk: Totting up our winners and losers
As Christmas is rapidly approaching, this seems like a good time to review the Small Talk year. And on reflection, it is no exaggeration to say that we have played a blinder. But we also ought to confess that we have got some stock picks dreadfully wrong. Such is life for any tipper, and making the right choices at the small cap end of the market is notoriously difficult. Our best calls have been on the downside. It is not fun predicting doom and gloom for companies. But companies and the market getting it wrong is as much a part of investing as looking for the next 20-bagger, and we believe that short selling, while not likely to win any popularity contests, is a legitimate method of making money from pricing anomalies and correcting mis-priced securities. In March, we warned investors to steer well clear of ChoicesUK, the CD and DVD retail group, after a profit warning that came swiftly on the heels of a much more bullish update just weeks before.

Commissioners shun plan for $7.1 million DSS building
County commissioners flatly rejected a planned Social Services facility that is $2.3 million over budget. Salisbury architect Bill Burgin presented schematic plans to commissioners Thursday for the renovation and expansion project that would combine all Social Services offices at the Health Services Building on Faith Road. The county hired Burgin to design the project, which includes renovating the existing mental health section of the building and adding new space. Commissioners had agreed on a budget of $5.1 million for a total of 45,000 square feet of space. The county is in the process of borrowing the money for the project. Commissioners were briefly speechless when Burgin unveiled the price tag $7.1 million. The design features a two-story brick addition with a total of 61,000 square feet of new and renovated space.
Special Assignment: Love and Livestock
Finding love is like looking for a needle in a haystack, and living miles away from anyone only makes it harder. "You don't see anybody out here other than the mail man," Maquoketa farmer John Mayland said. John's friends in Dyersville, who also have a side hobby of matchmaking, say he's the cream of the crop. "We will see young girls come in here and we're really focused on John lately. We ask if they're dating...We haven't got anybody else in line yet. We're still working on John," Christi Hess said. But the dating game is tough in small town eastern Iowa. "I have to go to the cities. It's 60 miles to go to Davenport, it's 20 or 30 miles to Dubuque. Otherwise, it's small town bars and you never know what you get in a bar. Nobody's looking for commitment. So, it's pretty slim pickings around here," John said.

A painful past sparks concern about Obama's safety
I must admit, fears of a repeat of those shameful, cowardly acts gripped me early on, and I too wished Obama would not run to spare his family, my heart, and our nation more dark days. Surely, this would be too much to bear. Now, I believe his determination to fulfill his destiny, regardless of the demented folks who would stop at nothing to destroy him, is bringing about the HEALING that we all desperately need. Every time I watch him go further and further to realize his dreams, it rekindles the depth of pride and hope I had in my heart for this country inspired by President John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. NO MATTER WHETHER HE WINS OR LOSES, HE DESERVES THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXERCISE HIS FREEDOM in what is suppose to be the land of the 'free and the brave.' In doing so, it just may restore this nation's spirit so badly broken by an ignorant few.
